Mortgage Protection

Protection plans are designed to help protect against the impact of death, terminal illness or critical illness (if chosen) on you and your family. Your policy could be used to help pay off your outstanding mortgage or to help protect your family’s lifestyle and everyday living expenses.

Mortgage Protection

A mortgage protection plan is designed to cover a client:

• If they were to die before the end of the policy term.
• If the plan includes Critical Illness Cover, and the client is diagnosed with one of a range of critical illnesses as mentioned in the respective company’s key features document before the end of the policy term, then as long as they meet the criteria for a claim the plan will pay out.
• Most companies include terminal illness cover within the policy, if a client is diagnosed as being terminally ill, which, in the opinion of the hospital consultant and the company’s medical officer, means the illness is expected to lead to death within 12 months, then for Mortgage Protection Plans, the relevant company will pay out a lump sum in full as soon as the diagnosis is accepted by the insurer, as long a there are two years or more remaining on the plan at the time of claim. After this happens, the policy will end and the client will no longer have any cover. At the beginning of the plan the client can decide if they want the policy to cover one or two people (Joint Life Cover).
• If the cover is for a joint life cover, the lump sum will only pay out once. This will be when the first person dies or has a valid claim before the end of the policy.

Protect your Mortgage

Mortgage Protection Plans may not completely pay off the outstanding mortgage unless the client ensures that the amount of cover is adjusted to match any new mortgage arrangements that they may have. If the client has decreasing cover they must also check that the interest rate applied to any existing mortgage loan does not become higher than the interest rate applied to the policy.
